Amherst College is a private liberal arts college located in Amherst, which is a town in the US state of Massachusetts, in Hampshire County, in the Connecticut River valley. During the 2000 census, Amherst's population was estimated at a number of nearly 34 900 inhabitants, fact which makes it the largest community in Hampshire County, larger than Northampton, which is the county seat.
The college was established in 1821, being founded as an attempt to relocate Williams College, by its President Zephaniah Swift Moore. It is the third oldest institution of higher education in the state and it is an exclusively undergraduate four-year institution. It first started as a men's college, and remained so, until 1975, when it became co-ed.
Amherst's athletic teams are known as the Lord Jeffs and Lady Jeffs, and they compete in the NCAA's Division III, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Their distinctive colors are purple and white and their mascot is Lord Jeffrey Amherst.
Among Amherst College's noteworthy alumni, there are also: Francis Amasa Walker - third president of MIT, David Peck Todd - noted astronomer, leader of significant astronomical expeditions, Talcott Parsons - one of most influential sociologist during much of the 20th century, Raymond Smith Dugan - discovered 16 Asteroids (including 516 Amherstia), wrote standard two volume textbook, William Summer Johnson - among the world's leading synthetic organic chemists, Albert II of Monaco, and Francisco G. Flores - former President of El Salvador.
